Abstract: In the Czech Outer Western Carpathians (OWC), the lower limit of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs) occur associated with moderate local relief and slope gradient, showing a limited degree of geomorphic development. Here, DSGSDs display a relatively high spatial frequency, despite the limited tectonic and seismic activity, often claimed as major preparatory and triggering factors. Nonetheless, favourable stratigraphic and structural features in flysch successions, together with fluvial downcutting, provide conditions prone to DSGSDs. The study area of Travný Mt. hosts the typical DSGSDs in the highest part of Czech OWC. With the aim of unravelling the controlling and triggering factors, the internal structure, and the timing and kinematics of mass-movement activity, a multidisciplinary investigation was performed. LiDAR-based and field geomorphological mapping allowed to constrain the extent of the of DSGSD, expressed by characteristic landforms such as antislope scarps and grabens. The structural analysis and geophysical surveys (ERT and GPR) provided insight into the internal structure of the DSGSD, reaching a depth of &gt;100 m, and supported its mountain-scale spatial propagation. The instability is controlled by inherited faults, deep-penetrating joints and and the stratigraphic contact between brittle caprock overlying weaker rocks. Morphologically, the most prominent deformation is located in the upper part, which is dominated by toppling of flysch blocks with thick-bedded sandstone. The results of the trenching technique and geochronological analyses point to the episodic kinematics of this portion of the DSGSD, revealing a significant displacement event (ca. 9.9 ka) linked to a major climate change occurred after the Late Glacial/Holocene transition.</description>

Abstract: AbstractHispaniola accommodates a significant portion of the present‐day convergence between Caribbean and North American plates. Located in southern Hispaniola, the Neogene Enriquillo basin is bounded by the Neiba and Bahoruco mountain ranges. The&#xD;
role of active individual faults and fault systems in this basin is not well understood, particularly their geometry and kinematics, slip rates and seismic activity. Knowing this&#xD;
information is important to characterize the active deformation pattern in southern Hispaniola, but it is also crucial to estimate the regional seismic hazard. Here, we analyze GPS geodetic data and seismicity and present the results of fault mapping of the Enriquillo basin based on tectonic field observations, radiocarbon and luminescence dating, remote sensing and regional magnetic data. These observations indicate&#xD;
that WNW to NW‐trending thrust faults and associate large‐scale folds, as well as minor strike‐slip and normal faults, have been active both in the Tertiary rocks within the mountain ranges and in the basin margins along the Quaternary. Inversion of fault‐slip data establishes that a NE‐directed shortening has controlled the formation of these structures. We propose a regional kinematic model in which the present‐day kinematics of each main fault depend strongly on its orientation with respect to the regional stress tensor. Computed seismic hazard defines a map pattern for the peak ground acceleration elongated to the main seismotectonic fault zones. Regions around the southwest Sierra de Neiba, the western Enriquillo basin and the northwest&#xD;
Sierra de Bahoruco, where peak ground acceleration exceed 500cm/s2, have a high seismic hazard.

Abstract: La datación por luminiscencia ópticamente estimulada (OSL) permite establecer en qué momento los granos de cuarzo en sedimentos estuvieron expuestos a la luz solar por última vez. En este trabajo, la OSL se ha aplicado para establecer la cronología de varios rellenos sedimentarios localizados a lo largo de la Cova de la Font Major, en la Espluga de Francolí, Tarragona, donde se ha hallado un excepcional conjunto de grabados del Paleolítico Superior y restos arqueológicos de la Edad del Hierro, relacionados con un uso cultural de la cavidad. La datación por OSL y C14 de los depósitos que rellenan, y colmatan en algún caso, las galerías debía permitir establecer cuando éstas quedaron taponadas y ayudar a establecer, principalmente, una cronología de uso del santuario paleolítico.&#xD;
Los resultados del total de 10 muestras sedimentarias analizadas proporcionan, en algunos niveles, edades alrededor de un orden de magnitud más antiguas respecto a los obtenidos por C14. Esto indica que, entre la entrada del sedimento que contenía los granos de cuarzo a la cavidad y su deposición en el nivel de donde fueron extraídos, pasaron unos miles de años, durante los cuales fue retrabajado una o varias veces,&#xD;
sin exposición a la luz solar. Esta información, si bien no aporta datos directos sobre la frecuentación humana, permite entender la dinámica sedimentaria de la cavidad. Las dataciones obtenidas datan de forma precisa los momentos en que se produjo un aporte de sedimento desde el exterior.&#xD;
Este trabajo pone de manifiesto la dificultad para relacionar, en sistemas kársticos, los momentos de aporte sedimentario desde el exterior y su deposición dentro de las cavidades, pero también pone en valor la importancia de la información sobre procesos de sedimentación aportada por la respuesta luminiscente de los granos de cuarzo.
