Abstract: The emergence of the Middle Palaeolithic, and its variability over time and space are key questions in the field of prehistoric archaeology. Many sites have been documented in the south-eastern margins of the Massif central and the middle Rhône valley, a migration path that connects Northern Europe with the Mediterranean. Well-dated, long stratigraphic sequences are essential to understand Neanderthals dynamics and demise, and potential interactions with Homo sapiens in the area, such as the one displayed at the Maras rock shelter (“Abri du Maras”). The site is characterised by exceptional preservation of archaeological remains, including bones dated using radiocarbon (14C) and teeth using electron spin resonance combined with uranium series (ESR/U-series). Optically stimulated luminescence was used to date the sedimentary deposits. By combining the new ages with previous ones using Bayesian modelling, we are able to clarify the occupation time over a period spanning 200,000 years. Between ca. 250 and 40 ka, the site has been used as a long-term residence by Neanderthals, specifically during three interglacial periods: first during marine isotopic stage (MIS) 7, between 247 ± 34 and 223 ± 33 ka, and then recurrently during MIS 5 (between 127 ± 17 and 90 ± 9 ka) and MIS 3 (up to 39,280 cal BP).</summary>

Abstract: The La Mancha plain in Spain has yielded significant insights into the Paleolithic sequence, particularly in the Upper and Middle Guadiana Basin region. This study focuses on the discoveries and explorations surrounding the Cueva de los Toriles, highlighting its importance within the regional archaeological context. The area's Quaternary deposits have facilitated the identification of numerous Paleolithic sites, predominantly featuring lithic materials crafted from quartzite. The Lower Paleolithic record, primarily found on the terraces of the Guadiana River and its tributaries, reveals Acheulean assemblages characterized by large tools such as bifaces and chisels. In contrast, the Middle Paleolithic is marked by an increase in Mousterian sites distributed across the region, demonstrating varied lithic exploitation strategies including discoid debitage and Levallois techniques. Cueva de los Toriles stands out due to its exceptional preservation of a diverse lithic assemblage, despite the challenges posed by disturbed sediments from previous human occupation. This site has provided insights into technological adaptations and cultural practices from the Middle Paleolithic to recent times, evidenced by the presence of tools like bifacial implements and agricultural instruments such as threshing blades. The complex stratigraphic layers within the cave present a unique challenge for archaeological interpretation, offering a rich tapestry of successive human activities. Overall, this study contributes valuable data to understanding the prehistoric occupation in La Mancha, emphasizing the significance of Cueva de los Toriles as a key site for exploring human cultural evolution over millennia</summary>

Abstract: This work proposes a new approach for the analysis of radionuclides in NORM-type solid materials included in a European-level intercomparison test (Environmental Radiation Monitoring, REM2020), provided by the Environmental Radiation Monitoring group of the Joint Research Centre (JRC). The measurement techniques employed are inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), using both quadrupole analyzer-equipped instruments (Q-ICP-MS) and high-resolution instruments with magnetic sector analyzer (HR-ICP-MS), and atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Initially, the samples undergo microwave digestion using EPA methods adapted to the environmental matrix, yielding a nitric acid solution suitable for subsequent chemical analysis. Isotopes 40K, 235U, 238U, 230Th, and 232Th have been quantified due to their relevance from both radiological and environmental perspectives. An additional advantage of the proposed method is that besides determining concentrations and activities, it is also possible to ascertain the isotopic relationships of the radionuclides present in the samples, thereby determining whether the radiation originates from natural or anthropogenic sources.</summary>

Abstract: This work examines the possible behaviour of Neanderthal groups at the Cueva Des-Cubierta (central Spain) via the analysis of the latter’s archaeological assemblage. Alongside evidence of Mousterian lithic industry, Level 3 of the cave infill was found to contain an assemblage of mammalian bone remains dominated by the crania of large ungulates, some associated with small hearths. The scarcity of post-cranial elements, teeth, mandibles and maxillae, along with evidence of anthropogenic modification of the crania (cut and percussion marks), indicates that the carcasses of the corresponding animals were initially processed outside the cave, and the crania were later brought inside. A second round of processing then took place, possibly related to the removal of the brain. The continued presence of crania throughout Level 3 indicates that this behaviour was recurrent during this level’s formation. This behaviour seems to have no subsistence-related purpose but to be more symbolic in its intent.</summary>
