Abstract: This Dataset includes data from an experimental research project led by Dr. A. Mateos and approved by the Hospital Universitario de Burgos Ethical Committee (Burgos, Spain) (BioE8-CEIC 1815). The aim of the project was to quantify the optimal locomotion speed (OLS), the minimum cost of transport (minCoT), and the energetic cost of walking in a sample of 74 urban children and adolescents of both sexes, aged 7-14 years. The entire data set acquired was incorporated into the EVOBREATH database (Mateos et al., 2016) and data were partially analysed in Mateos, Zorrilla-Revilla and Rodríguez (2022, At their own pace: Optimal walking speed in children and adolescents, American Journal of Biological Anhtropology 178, 593-604. Abstract: This Dataset includes data from an experimental research project led by Dr. A. The aim of the project was to quantify the energetic cost of a simulated extractive foraging activity (digging out wooden stakes which simulated underground food resources) in a sample of 40 urban children and adolescents of both sexes, aged 8-14 years. The entire data set acquired was incorporated into the EVOBREATH database (Mateos et al., 2016) and several data were analysed in Mateos, Zorrilla-Revilla and Rodríguez (2022, Let’s Play to Dig: A Vigorous Energetic Task for a Young Forager?     <summary type="text">Title: EVOBREATH. Datasets for evolutionary bioenergetics research on anthropology

Abstract: Human bioenergetics has been incorporated into the palaeobiology of human ancestors during the last years to broaden our understanding of Human Evolution. The hypotheses based solely on the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the fossil record, cannot easily explain many of the questions about the physiology of past humans. Data on the energetics and physiology of recent humans, together with comprehensive analyses of body proportions and body composition in relation to human metabolism, are needed to understand the evolutionary constraints of hominin ecophysiology. Furthermore, specific datasets including energetic data from modern humans are required to model hominin palaeophysiology. EVOBREATH Datasets were gradually developed since 2013 to store and manage all the data obtained in the Research Programs on Experimental Energetics developed by the Palaeophisiology and Human Ecology Group and the Palaeoecology of Mammals Group of the National Research centre on Human Evolution (CENIEH, Burgos, Spain). All experimental tests were developed either in the CENIEH BioEnergy and Motion Lab (LabBioEM) or in the field, using mobile devices. Datasets include quantitative experimental data related to human anthropometry (Height, Weight, all postcranial dimensions and segments, including hands and feet, and computation of anatomical indices), body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, muscular mass, body water), and energetics (resting metabolic rate and energetic expenditure in different physical activities, oxygen consumption (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production measured breath-by-breath) obtained in multiple studies with in vivo subjects of different ages (adults, adolescents and children) and both sexes (n = 501). These datasets are useful to optimize the time-consuming process of generating experimental data and to facilitate their reuse by the scientific community. Researchers can readily employ the datasets in their own research endeavours.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: At their own pace: Optimal walking speed in children and adolescents

Abstract: Objectives: An important factor for human walking behavior is the speed at which an individual—adult or non-adult—is able to move at a minimum energetic cost. Our aim was to assess the extent to which juveniles walking with adults force the group to set a pace that is energetically too costly for adults by comparing the optimal walking speed of juveniles and adults. Materials and methods: An experimental study was carried out indoors in a sample of 74 children and adolescents of both sexes, between 7 and 14 years of age. Volunteers walked on a treadmill at six different speeds, and the gross cost of transport (CoT), minimum gross energy cost (minCoT), and optimal locomotion speed (OLS) were determined for each individual. These values were compared with the optimal values for adults, as reported in the literature. Results: Our results show that OLS is similar in boys and girls, and that there are no sex differences in minCoT. Older individuals, as a consequence of their larger size, spend more energy at their optimal speed than younger children. Discussion: Juveniles are not a real burden for the rest of the group in foraging societies, neither in energetic terms nor in locomotor efficiency, being able to achieve optimal walking speeds similar to adults. The so-called energetic dilemma for sex-mixed walking groups does not affect juveniles when moving together with adults or in sex-mixed parties.</summary>
